Pokémon is one of the world’s most beloved fantasy games. The Nintendo game originally debuted in Japan in February 1996, according to Britannica. And since then, it has exploded. From the iconic television show to the cult of Pokémon cards, it has continued to evolve.

So if you are the new pet parent to a kitten and looking for the perfect Pokémon cat name for your newest family member, you came to the right place.

According to Dexerto, there are a total of 28 cat Pokémon in the Pokéverse. In total, there are 905 Pokémon (as of June 2022), per USA Today. So there are so many Pokémon characters and creatures to get Pokémon cat name inspiration from.

Here are some of the best Pokémon names for cats. (And for a complete list of all the Pokémon names to ever exist, you can check out the official Pokédex.)

Best Pokémon Names for Cats

Starting your search for some good Pokémon names for cats? Here are some of the best.

Ash Ketchum: Ash may be the most famous trainer in the Pokeverse. After all, he is the main character and his journey towards becoming a Pokémon trainer is highlighted throughout the series. It’s a classic, strong name for any kitten.

Meowth: This list couldn’t be complete without Meowth, one of the original cat Pokémons. Meowth loves to collect shiny things, and if the same goes for your kitten, it’s a sweet name to choose.

Luxio: Luxio is another fantastic cat Pokémon. Powered by electricity, this Pokémon has plenty of energy–and if you kitten does also, it may be a fitting name.

Professor Oak: Professor Oak is a wise Pokémon professor who studies Pokémon in his lab. If you have a heart for science and recognize him from your introduction to the Pokémon game, it’s a fun ode.

Skitty: How cute is Skitty? This pink Pokémon has “the habit of becoming fascinated by moving objects and chasing them around” and often chases its own tail. This goofy creature may remind you of your own kitten.

Chloe Cerise: Chloe is a pretty name on its own, but if you are looking to name your cat after a female Pokémon trainer, Chloe Cerise is a great one. She may not be the warmest character in the Pokémon series and leans towards introversion, but she is smart and will open up to people with time. If that sounds like your kitten, you have a perfect match.

Pikachu: I mean, we had to! Right? Pikachu is one of the first Pokémon, and also the mascot for the franchise. Pikachu is also just so darn cute–with puffy cheeks that are “extra soft and super stretchy”. Sound like your kitty? You should choose this iconic Pokémon name.

Glameow: Does your kitty give off glam vibes? Glameow may be the perfect anime for your bougie kitty. Glameow “claws if displeased and purrs when affectionate,” and is known for being fickle.

Even for a chart-topping pop star, Taylor Swift is a force. The singer-songwriter-actress is the ultimate multi-hyphenate, showcasing her many talents across musical genres, as well as the film world. Our favorite accomplishment on her expansive resume? That would have to be Ultimate Cat Mom.

As Swifties know, Taylor is a certified Proud Cat Lady, frequently sharing photos of her own feline friends – Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson, and Benjamin Button – on Instagram. When discussing her biggest inspirations with Time, Taylor credited her cats, right alongside her fans and Sir Paul McCartney: “They’re very dignified. They’re independent. They’re very capable of dealing with their own life,” she told the outlet of her feline friends.

As Taylor’s latest album, “Midnights,” dominates charts and smashes records, we took the opportunity to comb through her extensive catalog for the best Taylor Swift-inspired cat names. (Look what you made us do!) Inspired by her life and lyrics, these musical names are guaranteed hits.

Bailey: Traditionally an English male name, Bailey is modernly used for girls just as often. Sweet and snappy, it has plenty of pet potential

Brooklyn: Calling all city kitties! The NYC borough makes for a classic unisex choice with celebrity appeal, as evidenced by Brooklyn Beckham and Brooklyn Decker.

Darcy: Although used more often for girls, Darcy also calls to mind Jane Austen’s Mr. Darcy – a character so infamously fussy and aloof, we have to assume he’s part feline.

Lucky: If you adopt, Lucky is a fitting pick for your new best amigo or amiga.

Max: As a common nickname for Maxine as well as male names such as Maxwell and Maximilian, Max is a short and sweet unisex winner.

Mittens: Some of the most traditional and beloved cat names are gender-neutral by nature. Case in point? Mittens, a go-to choice for cats with paw markings.

Patches: Another time-tested choice, Patches is ideal for calico cats with haphazard fur patterns.

Scout: This adorable gender-neutral name has an adventurous air that lends itself perfectly to curious cats.

By every measure of the word, calico cats are colorful. Distinguished by their multicolored coats, calicos are typically white, orange and black. While “calico” is a general term referring to tri-color domestic cats of any breed, fans insist that the fashionable felines share vibrant, distinctly quirky personalities.

Calico companions require names as unique as their coats, of course. From sweet to spicy, cutesy to spooky, these calico cat names cover it all.

Best Calico Cat Names

Cat looking up at owner something is interesting and good calico cat names

Good names for calico cats are colorful and personality-packed (just like cats!). These memorable monikers are at the top of our list:

  • Autumn
  • Butterscotch
  • Gizmo
  • Lucky
  • Marble
  • Neapolitan
  • Patches
  • Picasso
  • Tortoise
  • Trinity

Autumn: The fall season’s rich palette makes this nature-inspired name a classic choice for calicos.

Butterscotch: How sweet! The sugary confection has a mottled, orange-brown hue and comes complete with two cute nicknames, “Butters” or “Scotch.”

Gizmo: The “Gremlins” protagonist is an adorable Mogwai with calico-ish coloring (just make sure not to feed Gizmo after midnight).

Lucky: Calico cats are considered lucky in many folklore traditions. Japanese sailors traveled with calico cats to ensure a safe (and rodent-free) voyage.

Marble: Like marble, many calico coats have swirled and striated patterns.

Neapolitan: Comprised of three flavors (chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry), Neapolitan ice cream is a fitting namesake for tri-colored kitties.

Patches: A classic pet name, Patches is especially purrfect for calicos, whose coats can resemble haphazard quilts.

Picasso: This artsy name pokes gentle fun at the seemingly distorted, collage-like nature of the calico coat. The iconic artist’s first name, Pablo, is just as fun!

Tortoise: Everyone loves animals named after other animals. This reptilian name is a cross-species hit with a wink to mottled “tortoiseshell” patterns.

Trinity: Meaning “a group of three,” Trinity gained popularity as a girl’s name in the ‘90s thanks to the “Matrix” character.

Female Calico Cat Names

Sweet calico cat laying down in blanket

Have you ever noticed that most calico cats are female? That’s because coat color is controlled by genetics, and calico coloring requires two X chromosomes – meaning the overwhelming majority of calicos are Tomasinas, not Toms. We have plenty of female calico names to choose from with that in mind.

Callista: Names that start with “cal” can be a fun way to nod to your feline friend’s calico coat. A Greek name meaning “most beautiful,” Callista fits the bill.

Ember: Sometimes used as a girl’s name, Ember evokes the warm, smoky colors of a campfire.

Hazel: For a great color name with vintage vibes, consider Hazel. An elusive mix of golden and brown, the shade is calico-esque.

Sweet calico cat names

Iris: Of Greek origin, the name Iris means “rainbow,” making it perfect for colorful kitties.

Jemima: Popular in the UK, Jemima is an old-school name with a calico pedigree. In the musical “Cats,” Jemima is an innocent tri-colored kitten.

Maizie: This quirky girl’s name calls to mind maize or wild corn. Some varieties of the crop have colorful, calico-like kernel patterns.

Maryland: Looking for a stately name? On October 1, 2001, the calico cat became the official cat of Maryland

Saffron: If your calico has a heavy helping of orange, consider this spicy name.

Toffee: The chewy candy could be a sweet namesake with shades ranging from chocolaty brown to creamy caramel.

Velma: In the “Scooby-Doo” franchise, Velma Dinkley is known for her brunette hair and orange outfit.

Male Calico Cat Names

While rare, calico males do exist! Consider these special names for these special guys:

Bengal: With their orange, black, and white coats, tigers may as well be honorary calicos. For a name with a wild side, consider Bengal.

Calvin: “Calvin the Calico” has an unmistakable ring to it. In the classic comic “Calvin and Hobbes,” Calvin’s best friend is Hobbes, a stuffed tiger.

Camo: Short for “camouflage,” Camo is a fun name for cats whose coats have mottled markings.

Nemo: If your cat doesn’t mind being named after a fish, consider Nemo. Disney’s famous clownfish is orange, white, and black like a calico.

Reese: With iconic orange packaging and chocolate hues, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are the calicos of the candy world.

Rusty: With a cute country appeal, Rusty calls to mind shades of orange and brown.

Shere Khan: Have a real king of the jungle? Shere Khan is the name of the large-and-in-charge Bengal tiger in “The Jungle Book.”

Sir Mix-a-Lot: When it comes to mixed-color coats, this ‘90s throwback has plenty of potential. For short, you can simply address Sir Mix-a-Lot as “Sir.”

Tigger: In the words of the classic “Winnie-the-Pooh” song: “The wonderful thing about Tiggers is Tiggers are wonderful things.”

Trey: Meaning “three,” the name Trey was originally a nickname for a third-generation son.

Meowth: In the Pokémon universe, Meowth is an adorably named calico-ish creature.

Pixel: Because richly patterned calico coats may appear mottled or pixelated!

Potpourri: Or should it be Potpurrri? Commonly used to refer to a fragrant mix of flower petals, the word “potpourri” can also simply mean a mixture.

Pumpkin Spice: For a cute color-coded name that’s always in season, try Pumpkin Spice. It’s perfect for orange cats with contrasting hues of cinnamon, nutmeg and whipped cream.

Chimera: In Greek mythology, the Chimera was a fire-breathing hybrid creature. The term “chimera” is also used in genetics to refer to a single organism with more than one set of genes. Either way, Chimera is perfect for a one-of-a-kind kitty.

Equinox: Equinox evokes the season’s pretty palette for a fall-inspired name that’s more mysterious than Autumn.

Maneki: The maneki-neko is a Japanese cat figurine that is thought to bestow good luck upon its owner. Traditionally, the cat is a calico Japanese Bobtail.

Monarch: For a regal name, consider Monarch in honor of the black, orange and yellow butterflies.

Trefoil: In design and architecture, “trefoil” is used to describe a shape made from three overlapping rings, although fans of Girl Scout cookies may more readily associate the name with shortbread.

As one-of-a-kind creatures, every cat deserves (…and possibly demands) a unique, well-considered name. But if your feline friend is Siamese, the naming process carries even more pressure. Native to Thailand, the ancient breed has become beloved around the world thanks to a winning combination of brains and beauty.

Need a special name deserving of a special Siamese? From classic to quirky, mischievous to magical, these Siamese cat names are fitting for the finest of felines.

Best Siamese Cat Names

The best Siamese cats deserve the best Siamese cat names.

  • Baily
  • Bandit
  • Cappuccino
  • Felicity
  • Hershey
  • Loki
  • Ninja
  • Sapphire
  • Tao

Bailey: The Cat Fanciers’ Association recognizes four different colors of Siamese cats: seal point (dark brown markings); chocolate point (light brown markings); blue point (bluish grey markings) and lilac point (pinkish grey markings). All four varieties have cream-colored coats and tons of spirit, making the Irish liquor a cheers-worthy choice.

Bandit: Prepare to have your heart stolen! Many Siamese cats—especially seal and chocolate points—have distinctive “mask” markings, making Bandit a natural fit.

Cappuccino: From the coloring to the caffeine, this coffeehouse favorite is perfect for the energetic breed.

Felicity: Known as “people cats,”” Siamese are extremely affectionate, personable, and chatty. With that in mind, consider a traditionally human name such as Felicity, which means “happiness.”

Hershey: For a chocolate point Siamese, there’s no sweeter name than Hershey. For a more subtle option, consider Milton, the candy magnate’s first name.

Loki: Known as the “trickster God” in Norse mythology, Loki wasn’t necessarily good or bad. The loveable scamp simply enjoyed causing chaos—effectively making him the Patron Saint of Siamese Cats.

Ninja: Endlessly inquisitive and extremely athletic, Siamese tend to make use of all nine lives. Don’t be surprised if Ninja dive-bombs you from the top of the refrigerator in search of hugs.

Sapphire: Vivid, deep blue eyes are a Siamese signature. With this in mind, Sapphire is a real gem of a name.

Tao: If you’d like a literary-inspired name, there are a number of memorable Siamese cats in fiction. For a steadfast and loyal companion, consider Tao, the feline hero of “The Incredible Journey.”

Female Siamese Cat Names

Unique, beautiful, and a touch mysterious, these names are fitting for the sassiest Siamese.

Babette: Children’s author Clare Turlay Newberry was famous for her charming illustrations of cats. One of her cutest characters, Babette, is a Siamese kitten.

Dara: The first depiction of a Siamese cat appears in an ancient manuscript known as the Tamra Maew (“The Cat-Book Poems”), which originated in present-day Thailand. To pay homage to the breed’s origins, consider Dara, a Thai female name meaning “evening star.”

Jocelyn: Siamese are always ready to play, play, play. Meaning “joyful” and “playful,” Jocelyn is an English name with plenty of Siamese potential.

Mocha: For seal and chocolate point Siamese, Mocha is another coffee-inspired name to honor the breed’s hallmark coloring.

Rhonda: No matter the breed, a cat named Rhonda will always get a smile. But the Welsh name—which means “noisy,” thanks to the turbulent Rhondda River in South Whales—is especially fun for the notoriously “verbose” Siamese.

Because when you’re a Siamese, “Tom” simply won’t do.

Bucky: As fans of the “funnies” know, Bucky Katt is the scheming, snaggle-toothed Siamese star of the “Get Fuzzy” comic strip.

Frank: For a wink to those baby blues, consider a shout-out to “Ol’ Blue Eyes” himself, Frank Sinatra. This one also comes with plenty of fun nicknames: Swoonatra, The Voice, and The Chairman of the Board, to name a few.

Maverick: Siamese tend to do things their own (ahem, very unusual) way, which is why we love this fun “Top Gun”-inspired name.

Meowth: Meowth is a small, feline-like character in the Pokémon universe. While his breed is never specified, his chocolate-pointed coloring—and chatty, smart-mouthed ways—suggest Siamese.

Skippyjon: “Skippyjon Jones” is a series of children’s books starring a large-eared Siamese cat who thinks he’s a Chihuahua. Try Skip for short, or Mr. Jones for formal occasions.

Mystical Siamese Cat Names

Mystical Siamese cat

The Siamese has a mystical pedigree. Traditionally owned by royals, they were believed to inherit the souls of family members who passed away. Honor your pet’s supernatural side with these magical monikers.

Crookshanks: In the Harry Potter universe, Crookshanks is part Persian cat, part Kneazle (for all you Muggles, that’s a magical feline-like creature). While not Siamese, Crookshanks does have a larger-than-life personality that’s fitting for the breed.

Houdini: For playful cats with penchants for mischief, there’s no greater namesake than Harry Houdini. The legendary magician didn’t actually believe in hocus pocus, but he delighted in stumping audiences with his mesmerizing tricks and escapes.

Kit: Have a wickedly cute kitty? On the TV show “Charmed,” Kit is an animal guide who takes the form of a Siamese cat when protecting her witch friends.

Luna: For a subtly supernatural name, consider Luna. Meaning “moon” in Latin, it winks to the otherworldly yet has classic appeal.

Pyewacket: Pyewacket is a name long connected to mysterious felines in films and literature. The trend seems to have started in 17th-century England, when an accused witch allegedly confessed that she had a familiar spirit named Pyewacket.

Cleocatra: Cats held a place of honor in ancient Egypt, where they were thought to bring good luck. Equal parts sweet and sassy, Cleocatra is fit for a queen.

Cats have a reputation for being a bit mischievous, but not every fuzzball that joins your family is looking to start trouble. There are lots of cats who only crave love, attention, and snuggles, and their ideal way to pass the time is curling up on your lap and purring the hours away.

So, is your cat the loveliest, sweetest, most wonderful kitty on the planet? Does she need a name representative of her winning personality and charming nature? Look no further! Below you will find a list of good girl cat names for your sweet feline companion.

Two cute kittens cuddled in a blanket

Prissy: Let’s start with something obvious. Prissy is a name that sets all the right expectations for a girl kitten.

Kitty: Another classic name for a female cat. You can also call her “Miss Kitty” on more formal occasions.

Daisy: A sweet name for a sweet girl, calling to mind open fields, pretty flowers, and beautiful days.

Baby: A name that just fits for the feline that will always be your baby.

Cute cat being held by owner for good girl cat names

Bébé: A French twist on “Baby” that also tells everyone that you’re a fan of Schitt’s Creek and love Catherine O’Hara as Moira Rose.

Moira Rose: If Bébé doesn’t fit the bill, perhaps naming your sweet girl after Moira Rose herself will strike the right note.

Princess Penelope Tunabreath: This name is very descriptive, bringing attention to your kitty’s regal manner and semi-gross breath all at the same time.

Olivia: Olivia has been number one on the U.S. Census list of popular baby names for two years running! That means it’s the perfect name for a perfect girl cat. And any kitty called Olivia shares her name with Taylor Swift’s much beloved Scottish Fold.

Kitten at a photoshoot

Meredith: If Olivia doesn’t strike your fancy, you could name your lovely girl after Taylor Swift’s other Scottish Fold, Meredith.

Blanche: Your cat is your golden girl, and this name is a great way to thank her for being a friend.

Cleo: A shortened form of Cleopatra, Cleo is a name that brings to mind the grace, power, and wisdom of that famous queen of Egypt. It’s the ideal Egyptian cat name

Minnie: Is there a sweeter namesake than Minnie Mouse? We think not. It’s the ideal Disney cat name for the kitty who makes all your dreams come true.

Sweet girl kitten laying on a blanket

Fancy: If your special gal is the epitome of elegance, the name Fancy is only fitting.

Mittens: This classic cat name is classic for a reason—it calls attention to your pretty kitty’s tiny, adorable feet. And really, can you imagine a cat named “Mittens” doing anything naughty?

Belle: Is your girl the belle of the ball? Then this beautiful name is perfect for her.

Sorbet: This sweet treat is delicious inspiration for a good girl cat name. Plus, it’s a perfect food name for your cat.

Cute kittens sleeping on a pink rug

Marie: Maybe your cat should share her name with the feisty girl from The Aristocats. Marie was sweet, smart, and sassy—qualities we should all aspire to!

Nala: Another Disney-inspired name, Nala is the brave lioness from The Lion King who helps Simba reclaim Pride Rock. If your intrepid girl kitten needs a name that spotlights her adventurous nature, this is it!

Chantilly: Crème Chantilly is sweet whipped cream, making it the perfect name inspiration for a sweet kitty as well!

Sprinkles: Sprinkles is just an adorable name, and perfectly fitting for a cat that sprinkles joy into your life.

Cute kitten sitting in a basket with flowers

Zazzles: If you, like Sheldon Cooper, think that a certain cat is super zazzy, this is the obvious name for her. Just be sure to sing her favorite song, “Sleepy Kitty,” whenever it’s time for her to take a snooze.

Ambrosia: In Greek mythology, ambrosia is the food of the gods. It’s also a beautiful sounding name for an elegant girl cat.

Strudel: We’ve always had a soft spot for cats named after food (as this list would indicate). This name is perfect for a little girl kitten who is as sweet as a pastry!

Frida: Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter known for her fantastic and passionate self-portraits. She’s considered one of Mexico’s great artists. Any girl cat would be honored to carry her name.

Sweet cat laying down on a rug

Birdy: There’s something a little funny about naming a cat Birdy, right? And it’s a super-cute name!

Coco: Is your cat seemingly channeling famed fashion designer Coco Chanel with her unending refinement and sophistication? This is the name for her.

Persephone: Persephone is a beautiful name with a hint of darkness—she was Queen of the Underworld in Greek mythology, after all. The only downside to this name is that it’s a bit of a mouthful when you’re calling your girl kitty for dinner!

Paris: The City of Lights is great inspiration for a name when your kitty lights up your life. She’s as bright as the Eiffel Tower on a clear night!

If cats could speak, we assume they’d speak French. Elegant, sophisticated, and just a touch haughty. The “language of love” is a natural fit for our feline friends.

Not surprisingly, French is brimming with très bon names for continental kitties. Whether you’re looking for classy or sassy, funny or fancy, these magnifique French cat names are something to meow about.

Popular French Cat Names

Oh la la! Consider these popular French cat names for cultured kitties.

  • Babette
  • Beau
  • Bijou
  • Bonbon
  • Cherie
  • Clémentine
  • Colette
  • Gaston
  • Miaou
  • Minette

Babette: In French, names ending in “ette” are usually diminutives, meaning nicknames used for children. Babette is unique in that it can stand on its own, or be a diminutive for Barbara. Either way, Babette the Cat is a winner.

Beau: Meaning “handsome,” Beau is a popular French boy’s name and a classic choice for fine-looking felines.

Bijou: The French word for “jewel,” Bijou is also a unisex name that’s perfect for the most precious of pets. We especially like it for cats with expensive taste (so, all of them).

Bonbon: Tiny, sweet, and surprising, the liquor-filled French confection has plenty in common with cats. Plus, just like cats, it’s hard to stop at one! It’s a classic food-inspired cat name

Cherie: Looking for a simple name with a certain je ne sais quoi? Meaning “cherished” or “darling,” this French term of endearment is short and sweet.

Clémentine: Ideal for low-key cats, this French girl’s name means “gentle.” With the orange fruit in mind, it can also be fun for ginger kitties.

Colette: Known mononymously, Colette was a French novelist, journalist, mime, actress, and all-around wild woman. She was also a life-long cat-lover, and featured felines prominently in her work.

Gaston: As the villain of “Beauty and the Beast,” Gaston may have negative connotations for Disney fans. However, the name could also be a literary nod to Gaston Leroux, author of “Phantom of the Opera.”

Miaou: Presumably, cats meow in the same language. But “miaou” is the French human word for a meow – and we think it makes a pretty purrfect cat name.

Minette: French for kitten, this diminutive name is cute for cats of any age. After all, they’ll always be your baby.

Male French Cat Names

Cat on Paris window sill

Bonjour, monsieur! These male French cat names have a Parisian sensibility.

François: It doesn’t get any more French than François. The French form of “Francis,” this bougie name shortens to simply “Frank” when you want to keep things casual.

Jacques: Another classic, Jacques is the French form of “James.” It’s also a fun shout-out to Jacques Cousteau, the French explorer who—like many a cat—was fascinated by marine life.

Matisse: French artist Henri Matisse frequently incorporated feline friends into his paintings. In fact, he was said to feed his own cats – Minouche, Coussi, and La Puce – bits of fresh brioche every morning.

More male French cat names:

  • Alphonse
  • Etienne
  • Laurent
  • Milou
  • Monet
  • Pascal
  • Pierre
  • Remy
  • Voltaire
  • Yves

Female French Cat Names

Sacre bleu! These female French cat names are perfect for mademoiselles who meow.

Black Cat French Names

Black cat on sweaters

Black cats hold a special place in French culture, and while there are plenty of black cat names inspired by other cultures, we like a little French flair. Le Chat Noir (French for “The Black Cat”) was an iconic 19th-century nightclub, serving as the home base for Montmarte’s bohemian counterculture. For your own chat noir, consider these colorful names.

Darcy: Meaning “dark one,” this gender-neutral French name has a timeless appeal. For Jane Austen fans, it can also be a fun allusion to Mr. Darcy, the famously hard-to-read (and dare we say cat-like?) “Pride and Prejudice” character.

Matagot: According to local legends in southern France, matagots are spirits who appear as black cats. Although usually considered somewhere between evil and meddlesome, some say the so-called “magician cats” will bring wealth to a household if well fed. (Something tells us a cat started this rumor.)

Réglisse: The French word for “licorice,” Réglisse is perfect for sweet black cats. For short, Reggie is cute and casual.

Minuit: Wink to the witching hour with Minuit, the French word for “midnight.”

More French black cat names:

  • Baize (dark brown)
  • Brume (fog)
  • Fantôme (phantom or ghost)
  • Noir (black)
  • Nuit (night)
  • Ombre (shadow)
  • Panthère (panther)
  • Pénombre (twilight)

Folklore and superstitions have taught many to believe that black cats are “bad luck” and should only be owned by witches or celebrated around Halloween. But in reality they are adorable, beautiful creatures that are revered for their uniqueness. When owning such a majestic animal, coming up with a name for your black cat is key.

Many famous people from history have had a fun time naming them. Mark Twain had a black cat named Bambino. Frank Zappa named his black cat Marshmoff. And Jane Fonda had a black cat named Snickers.

Need a name for your own? Here are 139 fun, famous, and creative names for black cats to get you started.

9 Best Black Cat Names

Naming your cat is something you should put a lot of thought into. While there are many black cat names to choose from, here are our top favorites:

Midnight: The night sky is dark and magical, just like your feline’s coat. It’s the perfect name for the energetic cat that is full of energy and comes alive, well after the sun goes down. This name could be used for male or female cat.

Pepper: This is a popular name among black cat owners. Inspired by black pepper, which is a dark and vibrant color, this name fits the spicy cat in your life that operates by his or her own rules. It’s playful, fun and confident.

Ebony: Ebony is a very dark black wood that is often used to make piano keys. It’s also the perfect name for a cat with a very beautiful black coat and makes a great choice for a female feline.

Shadow: A shadow cast on the sidewalk on a hot summer’s day is bold and black, just like your feline. It’s also a cute name, showcasing the fact that your cat has a sweet and cuddly side.

Magic: Black cats just seem to have a little extra something about them. This playful name ties into the fun parts of a cat’s folklore and the days of witches casting spells, while also keeping things fun and playful.

Licorice: Whether your cat is sweet or spicy, Licorice is a name that instantly conjures up witches’ herbs and soothing potions. We think it’s the perfect name for a black-furred feline—whether you like the flavor of black licorice or not.

Wicked: By the pricking of my thumb, something wicked this way comes! Okay, so maybe your cat isn’t wicked, but a mischievous cat deserves a name that fits. Plus, if you’re a fan of the popular musical theater production, this is a fun option.

Knight: We like how this name does double duty as a strong, heroic medieval-inspired misnomer and offers a play on the blackness of night. This is a great choice for a daring and brave feline companion.

Sable: The name Sable has a nice ring to it. It’s basically interchangeable for the color black—though the shade can range from dark brown to gray. Sables are also black mourning garments, so if you’re into the macabre, this is a great name for your feline.

Guinness: This popular Irish beer is smooth and classically bittersweet. It’s darker than most beers and stands out amongst its colleagues, as does your cat with his lustrous black coat.

Jet: A jet plane commands the sky. The Jets were a lively teenage gang in the notorious West Side Story. And many people use the phrase “jet black” to describe the blackest of blacks. This is for that dark-furred cat with the pure coat and glowing eyes—the one who truly stands out and refuses to blend in.

Grime: While it might not be the most flattering feline name, there’s something quite amusing about calling a black cat “Grime.” It brings to mind images of soot and ash. But, you have to admit, the name has kind of a cool punk-rock feel to it, no?

Double, double toil and trouble. Whether you simply love Halloween, watch “Hocus Pocus” all year long, or have a fascination with the occult, witchy cat names provide endless possibilities for labeling our enchanting felines. After all, cats seem to take part in their fair share of sorcery.

These names can range from mystical and magical to downright menacing, but we love the strength and beauty found in each one. They harken back to fairy tales, folklore, and the beliefs of different cultures. And remember—not all witches are evil!

Whatever your reason for choosing one of these names for your cat, we believe they’ll bewitch anyone who encounters your furry friend.

Our Favorite Witchy Cat Names

Salem: Let’s get the obvious one out of the way first. Salem is a name that is immediately associated with witches since the witch trials were held there in the late 1600s. Since then, the Massachusetts town has had a spooky history and draws in tourists who are interested in its dark past. Salem also happened to be the name of the talking cat in the movie and television version of “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.”

Merlin: We love the name Merlin for a male cat who is wise beyond his years. This name comes from The Legend of King Arthur, where Merlin was a well-known wizard.

Circe: A famous figure in Greek mythology, Circe is the daughter of Helios who turned Odeysseus and his men into pigs when they visited her island. She was a sorceress who isn’t someone you wanted to cross—which seems like a fitting description for many felines we know.

Alma: In the Lifestime supernatural drama The Witches of East End, Alma is a warlock and Eva’s favorite daughter. In order to excute her plans, she tells everyoine she is her mother’s grandmother.

Severus: The name Severus actually means “stern” in Latin. It was made famous by the Harry Potter character Severus Snape, the potions teacher who played a large role in the popular fantasy series. If you have an ornery cat with a heart of gold and a deep loyalty, Severus makes a good option.

Endora: If you happened to watch “Bewitched” when it was on television in the 1960s or caught it on reruns, you know Endora is the name of Samantha Stevens’ mother on the series. She was a feisty mother-in-law who gave poor Darrin a run for his money.

Hermoine: Harry Potter fans will rejoice at this English Muggle-born witch name. She is an overachiever who is smart and logical. The name Hermoine first appeared in Shakespeare’s play. A Winter’s Tale. A lot of Harry Potter fans view Hermoine as a feminist icon.

Witchy Black Cat Names

Black cat on bed

Raven: This name is fitting for both male and female black cats since ravens have a long history of being part of spooky stories and witchcraft in pop culture and history. Swap their dark-colored feathers for some fur, and you have the perfect name for a crafty cat.

Licorice: Black licorice is a popular candy flavor, but licorice root is also something frequently put into spells and potions. It’s often used for binding and love spells, so if your cat is sweet and seems to have you charmed, this is the perfect name.

Eclipse: When a heavenly body like the moon or a planet moves into the shadow of another heavenly body, it is called an eclipse. For example, a solar eclipse occurs when the moon blocks light from the sun and casts a shadow on earth.

Midnight: It’s a classic name for a black cat, but Midnight definitely has a spooky feel. It’s the time that kicks off “the witching hour”—that time of night when witches, demons, and ghosts are at their most powerful. It’s a strong witchy black cat name for sure.

Nightshade: This is the name given to Belladonna, a purple flower that tends to grow around graves—or so legend has it. It’s known as deadly nightshade in folklore because the berries of the plant are poisonous to humans. In fact, it’s one of the most toxic plants in the Eastern Hemisphere, so it definitely has a witchy association.

Cauldron: While anyone can certainly cook with a cauldron, witches are known for using these typically black, cast-iron pots to brew their potions and spells. It’s a unique option for a witchy black cat name.

Maleficent: Get your wicked witch vibe on with the name Maleficent, a witch from Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. When not invited to a christening, she curses the infant princess. Ironically, this self-proclaimed “Mistress of All Evil” is portrayed as a fairy in the newest movie version of Sleeping Beauty.

Witchy Female Cat Names

Cat with pumpkins and leaves

Sukie: We love the 1987 movie “The Witches of Eastwick” and we’re particularly fond of Michelle Pfeiffer’s character Sukie Ridgemont. The name Sukie originates from Hebrew for the word “lily.” It’s a great option for a mild-mannered, tender-hearted cat.

Blaze: In the Silver Knight and the Fire Witch short story, Blaze is the main witch. She wears a witch outfit and has magical fire powers. She is serious, loyal to the king, and very selfless.

Minerva: Minerva is a great witchy name for a female cat, thanks in part to Minerva McGonagall from the Harry Potter series. She’s one of our all-time favorite witches, and the name Minerva is Latin in origin meaning “the mind.” The name is also related to the Roman goddess of wisdom, so if you have a smart feline on your hand, this is a good moniker.

Lilith: Known in pagan circles as a goddess, Lilith’s qualities are strength and protection—especially for witches. She’s sometimes depicted as a demon or a vampire and has an association with the underworld. In mythology and religion she is thought to have been Adam’s first wife who voluntarily left the Garden of Eden.

Glinda: Famously known as The Good Witch in the “Wizard of Oz,” Glinda guides Dorothy on her quest. She’s known as the most powerful sorceress in the Land of Oz. So if you’re looking for a witchy name for a very good cat, this is a great choice!

Cassandra: In mythology, Cassandra was a princess who was given the gift of prophecy, but was cursed because nobody ever believed her. If your cat seems to be on her 8 out of 9 lives, this could be a good option.

Broom Hilda: In 1970, cartoonist Russell Meyers unleashed Broom Hiolda, a green witch with long stringy hair on the world. She is funny and always getting into hijinx with her magic. The comic strip is still going strong and published in print newspapers worldwide.

Ursula: The famous villainess from Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Ursula is a sea witch. In the movie, Ursula offers the Little Mermaid the chance to become human. She is a squid who many praise as one of the greatest Disney antagonists of all time.

Witchy Boy Cat Names

Gandalf: One of the most popular wizards in literary history, Gandalf is the kind, good-hearted, and powerful wizard from “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit.” This would make a particularly good grey cat name for a senior feline. .

Giles: This name is inspired by Giles Corey, a farmer who was accused of witchcraft in Salem along with his wife, Martha Corey. While things didn’t work out for Giles Corey, a witchy boy cat named Giles has a certain appeal and you can definitely give him a better life.

Caleb: One of the teenage male witches from The Covenant movie, Caleb is one of the Sons of Ipswich. He is one of the oldest members of othe Sons and considered one of the bad boys on campus.

Mage: This name actually means “a magician” or “someone who practices magic,” so we can’t think of a better male cat name for your four-legged wizard.

Elminster: One of the high-level wizards from Dungeons & Dragons, he can take on the appearance of anything he chooses. In reality he is an older man with a gray beard.

Linden: We like this alternate spelling of Lyndon due to its association with Linden trees, which are commonly used in wicca and witchcraft. LInden flowers are often used in protection spells, love potions, or in prophecy work. Plus, it’s a cool boy cat name.

Magnus: This warlock from the Shadowhunter Chronicles is a powerful name for your male kitty. In the young adult fantasy franchise, Magnus is the high warlock of Brooklyn. He is powerful, tenderhearted, and over four centuries old.

Jareth: If you don’t know who Jareth, the Goblin King from “Labyrinth” is, then we can’t be friends anymore. The conniving, devilishly handsome villain (played famously by David Bowie) in the 1986 Jim Henson film was not a friend to the protagonist Sarah Williams. If you have a temperamental cat who rules his own dwelling at home, Jareth is the perfect name.

Saruman: This fictional character from The Lord of the Rings is a lower-level angel sent to middle Earth to fight against Sauron. Originally a force for good, he becomes enamored by power and aligns himself with the Dark Lord.

Warlock: A male equivalent of a witch, warlocks are sorcerers and practice witchcraft. A warlock encompasses great power and is often depicted as a dark character in books, television, and films.

Our Favorite Cat Names From Movies

Cheshire: We are big fans of disney cat names here, and this ode to the far-out feline from “Alice in Wonderland” makes a really great cat name. Not only does it bring to mind his famous googly eyes and wide-toothed smile, but Cheshire sounds a bit regal and old-worldly too. It has a classic ring to it that is cool enough for your friends to appreciate even if they aren’t Disney fans.

Milo: The heartwarming film “Milo and Otis” really brings back memories for us. Milo is the curious ginger cat who constantly gets into trouble. The pair separate during the movie, but then find their way back to each other. It’s one of those movies about enduring friendship, and we think Milo is the perfect name for your feline bestie.

Jinx: Who can forget Mr. Jinx from “Meet the Parents?” He’s a hilarious Himalyan who happens to be the pride and joy of Jack Byrnes, the father that Ben Stiller’s character Greg Focker is trying so hard to impress. Mr. Jinx comes when calls, waves his paw, and also knows how to use the toilet. Smart cat! He becomes a key character in some of the funniest scenes and think this name is fitting for either a boy or girl cat with a mischievous streak.

Church: Okay, okay, we agree—the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s “Pet Sematary” is terrifying. And Church the former cat of Ellie Creed is one of the main villians in the film who helps Gage kill people. It’s dark, we know. But if you’re a fan of the horror genre, this name is pretty cool.

Crookshanks: Ahhh, this feisty and intuitive feline is Hermione Granger’s companion in the “Harry Potter” movies. And despite Ron having a beef with him initially (since Crookshanks was mean to Scabbers, aka Peter Pettigrew), Crookshanks becomes a friend to nearly all of Hermione’s trustworthy compatriots. While Crookshanks is a male cat in the films, we think the name is perfectly suitable for both boy and girl cats—as long as they are clever!

Whether you’ve got a light gray Russian Blue, a silvery Chartreux, or a speckled Shorthair, it’s a great idea to give your feline a gray cat name to match.

Although gray might not seem like the most exciting color, there are all sorts of places to take inspiration from including the natural world, famous capital cities, historical figures, and even ancient Greek myths.

Before you begin testing out names, though, remember: You’re going to be saying this name countless times in the near future. As such, be sure to try out a handful before you settle on one. To help you get started, here are 150 awesome gray cat names to consider.

Our Favorite Gray Cat Names

There are hundreds of cool cat names for gray cats to choose from, but we’ve managed to cull down our list to the best of the best. Here are our top 5 options.

Luna: Greek in origin, the name Luna means “moon” and makes for a celestial and bright name choice for a kitten with a light gray or dappled coat. It’s a great pick for a cat with a calming and sweet personality, and it’s also one of our favorite gray-and-white and black cat names.

Dorian (Gray): Inspired by Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, this name’s a fun play on words—especially if you’re a British literature buff. Dorian was a character who wished that he could remain young and handsome while a magical portrait of him grew old, so it could be a good fit for a particularly good-looking boy who spends lots of time grooming.

Anastasia: This name’s ideal for Russian Blues. Elegant and royal, Anastasia (or Ana for short) was the name of the daughter of Nicholas II, the last emperor of Russia. Anastasia means “resurrection,” which could make it a powerful name for a rescue cat who’s been through a lot.

Sylvester: Get it? Silvester! While the popular cartoon Sylvester the cat had a tuxedo coat, we love this name for a cat with a particularly silvery or shiny coat, too. It just has a classic ring to it. And if you’re a Rocky fan, you could always name him Sylvester Stallone.

Oslo: Looking for unique gray cat names? Here’s our wildcard. For a playful boy or girl with a whimsical personality, consider the worldly name Oslo. The capital city of Norway, Oslo is well known for its fjords, snow-capped skiing spots, and very cloudy and gray weather.

While choosing the right name ultimately comes down to your own preference, you can use these questions to help you narrow down the list of almost right names to the right name.

  • What distinct physical qualities does your gray cat have?
  • What unique personality traits do you see in your gray cat?
  • What names feel natural to say when referring to your cat?
  • If you’re naming your cat as a kitten, which names do you believe will grow well her into adulthood?
  • Most importantly, what names do you love the most?

Some gray cats can also feature other colors in their coat as well. So, if you’re still looking for more inspiration to name your cat, check out our other lists for calico cat names and orange cat names.

In the end, there are no rules! As long as you love the name you’ve given your cat, you’ve chosen the right one—and that’s what matters most.

Ancient Egyptians loved cats. More than love—they worshipped cats. Cats have been found mummified in ancient archeological sites, and cat statues are another common find.

According to scholar James Allen Baldwin, cats have been found in Egypt as far back as 5,000 years. And while they served multiple purposes—from protecting Egyptian homes against rodents and venomous snakes and acting as bird hunters, they eventually came into god-status.

Cats became sacred to Egyptians. And let’s be real…it’s not that different for cat lovers today. So honoring them with a name inspired by Ancient Egypt seems fitting.

Disney fans have lots to be proud of. There have been 749 Disney films since 1937, according to D23. And if you are a Disney fan that recently got a new cat or kitten, you may be inspired to research some Disney cat names.

Whether you’re looking for Disney female cat names or male Disney cat names, there are thousands of characters to choose from. We rounded up some of our favorite picks that will suit your furry kitten well and honor your love for all things Disney.

Our Favorite Disney Cat Names

Culling down this list was really tough, but we went painstakingly (okay…it wasn’t that painful) went through the films, the characters, the history, and the park secrets to come up with our very favorite Disney names for cats. Here are our top 5 picks.

Simba: He may be the most famous Disney cat there is. Simba, from The Lion King, is the rambunctious prince who becomes the king of his pride. Simba means ‘lion’ in the African language of Swahili.

Walt: Walter Elias Disney was born in Chicago in 1901. He began his career in animation in Kansas City before moving to Hollywood where he established The Walt Disney Company and the amusement parks we love. It seems a fitting moniker for an ambitious and driven feline! Or if you want to take the more artsy route, Elias would work just fine too.

Mickey: Mickey Mouse is a cartoon character as well as the official mascot of the Walt Disney Company. Disney himself created and then named Mickey in 1928. And while this might seem like an obvious choice for a Disney-inspired cat name, we’re all about celebrating the classics.

Tinker Bell: Tinker Bell is the famous fairy in Peter Pan that lives in Neverland. She was described by Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie as a fairy who mended pots and kettles, like an actual tinker, and “her speech consists of the sounds of a tinkling bell”—which calls to mind some of our more melodical kitties.

Poppins: The famous movie Mary Poppins premiered in 1964 and starred Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, the musical and cheerful nanny. And while we like the name Mary, which means “cherished and beloved,” shortening things to just Poppins is super cute as a cat name.

Disney Female Cat Names

Regal looking cat on fancy chair

Disney has a wide variety of memorable feline characters. But they’re not all princesses looking for their prince charming. No matter what your feline’s personality type—from fancy and prissey to strong and stoic—we’ve got the perfect Disney female cat name options right here.

Nala: Nala from The Lion King became Simba’s wife and the queen of the pride in the classic Disney film. Nala means ‘gift’ in the African language of Swahili—and aren’t all of our cats the gift that keeps on giving?

Lady: Lady and The Tramp was released by Disney in 1955, and tells the story of uptown Cocker Spaniel dog, Lady. Lady means ‘a woman who is refined, polite, and well-spoken’—which is great for all those proper kitties out there.

Esmerelda: Esmerelda appeared in the 1996 movie, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, who protects the vulnerable Quasimodo and treats him kindly. The name Esmeralda means ‘emerald’ in Greek, so it may be a perfect fit if your female cat has green eyes.

Wendy: Wendy appeared in the 1953 film Peter Pan as Peter’s dear friend. Wendy’s full name is Wendy Darling. The name Wendy means ‘friend’.

More Disney Female Cat Names

  • Dory (Finding Nemo)
  • Alice (Alice in Wonderland)
  • Bambi (Bambi)
  • Charlotte (Charlotte’s Web)
  • Daisy (Donald Duck’s partner)
  • Cruella (101 Dalmatians)

Disney Male Cat Names

Male cat in a blue bowtie

Whether you’re waiting for your prince to come or simply want to show your Disney love, these Disney-inspired names for boy cats are really solid options. Here are our top male cat names that come from Disney stories and films.

Rajah: Rajah is the famous tiger from the Aladdin movie. He is Princess Jasmine’s loyal pet tiger. The name Rajah means ‘king or prince’ in India.

Olaf: Olaf is the lovable snowman from Frozen who was created by Elsa and Anna. Olaf means “ancestor’s heir” and is of Scandinavian descent. For a goofy, good-natured, white-coated kitty, this is the perfect choice.

Rafiki: Rafiki is the wise mandrill monkey from The Lion King that is also a shaman. His name means “friend” in the African language of Swahili and we love this option for a wise, sage-like cat who watches over the household.

Buzz: Also known as Buzz Lightyear, he is the proud and confident space ranger from the Toy Story series who famously says “To infinity and beyond!” It’s speculated that Buzz was named after famous astronaut Buzz Aldrin. Your little feline explorer will thank you for this one!

More Disney Male Cat Names

  • Timon
  • Dumbo
  • Pinnochio
  • Woody
  • Nemo

Disney Character Names for Cats

Cat in a fantasy mushroom world

It’s not always the princes and princesses that make Disney movies the best.

Mortimer: Mickey Mouse’s original name was actually Mortimer Mouse, until Walt Disney changed his name to Mickey in 1928.

Minnie: Again, sticking to the Disney classics is a sure-fire way to show your Disney fandom. Minnie Mouse was Mickey Mouse’s girlfriend who was created in 1928 and she appeared in 74 cartoons. She’s plucky, supportive, and sweet. If that sounds like your female feline, Minnie is a winning name.

Tigger: Tigger is the exuberant orange tiger from Winnie the Pooh that lives in Hundred Acre Wood. He was described in The House at Pooh Corner as “a Very Bouncy Animal” and he’s always a popular character in the parks. So if you have a ginger cat or a feline that likes to jump and pounce, Tigger is a wonderful choice.

Sparrow: As in Captain Jack Sparrow, the infamous pirate from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean series that began in 2003. Played by actor Johnny Depp, he became a fan favorite for his rum-filled banter. The sparrow is a small bird that symbolizes a meaningful and peaceful life.

More Disney Character Names for Cats

  • Grumpy (Snow White)
  • Triton (Little Mermaid)
  • Jiminy (Pinnochio)
  • Baloo (The Jungle Book)
  • Christopher Robin (Winnie the Pooh)

Disney Princess Names for Cats

Cat dressed up like a princess

Sometimes our felines are the ultimate princesses—there’s just no denying it. And while there are only a handful of Disney princesses, here are our top princess monikers for our royal companions.

Aurora: Aurora is the princess in the 1959 Disney film Sleeping Beauty. And in ancient mythology, Aurora was the Roman goddess of the dawn, whose tears turned into the morning dew. It’s a regal name for beautiful cats.

Jasmine: Princess Jasmine appeared in the 1992 film Aladdin. Jasmine is a Persian flower that’s known for its fragrance.

Belle: Belle was the French Disney princess in the 1992 film Beauty and the Beast who loves to read books. The word belle means ‘a woman or girl admired for her beauty and charm.’ But Belle is more than just beauty—she’s brave and full of character, so we think this is perfect for a cat with beauty and brains.

Ariel: Ariel is the red-haired mermaid Disney princess that wants to become human who was made famous in the 1989 The Little Mermaid. Ariel is a Hebrew name that means “lion of God.” We think Ariel is a sweet name for a ginger cat with orange or reddish hair.

Elsa: Elsa is the Disney ice princess who is actually a queen from Frozen. Elsa is Scandinavian and is short for Elizabeth. If your frosty feline needs to warm up to friends and strangers before she shows her soft side, Elsa is a great naming choice.

More Disney Princess Names for Cats

  • Cinderella
  • Anastasia
  • Merida
  • Tiana
  • Pocahontas
  • Mulan

Aristocats Names

When it comes to famous cat movies, the 1970 Disney film Aristocats ranks high up on the list. And if you’re in the mood for a little Parisian flair and a cat name that brings to mind Disney’s animation history, look no further than these Aristocats-inspired cat names.

Duchess: Duchess is a beautiful and ladylike cat that wears a golden collar, and is the mother of three kittens: Marie, Berlioz, and Toulouse. She is very devoted to her owner, Madame Adelaide Bonfamille—just as your kitty is devoted to you.

Marie: Marie is the white kitten of Duchess that is a girly girl and very prim and proper. If you have a girly-girl feline on your hand, Marie is a fun naming option.

Berlioz: Berlioz is the gray kitten of Duchess, and brother of Marie and Toulouse. He is quiet and mischievous. Berlioz also happens to be the last name of the famous French composer Hector Berlioz.

Thomas O’Malley: Thomas is the smooth-talking, streetwise cat that is the film’s protagonist who falls in love with Duchess. We love either Thomas or even O’Malley as options for a male cat with a soft-spot for romance.
